Radiology Exam Preparations

This page is meant to help you prepare for an upcoming radiology exam you are having done at MCMC by giving you some brief information about an exam, letting you know what might be asked of you during the exam, and letting you know what steps you need to take prior to an exam. These steps may differ from other Hospitals.
However, NOT ALL PROCEDURES OR INFORMATION MAY BE COVERED BELOW.

Upper G.I. (UGI)
This is a diagnostic procedure for your stomach. During this procedure you will be asked to drink a liquid substance called barium. The barium allows your stomach to be seen on x-ray films. It is very important that you properly prepare for this procedure so that your stomach adequately visualizes on the x-rays. If you have any questions regarding the prep or the procedure, please call the radiology department at 270-487-9231 ext. 1184.
PREP:
  1. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the night before the procedure.
  2. Do not smoke or chew gum on the morning of the procedure.
  3. Please arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time to allow time for registration.

Barium Swallow or Esophagram
This is a diagnostic procedure for your esophagus. During the procedure you will be asked to drink a liquid substance called barium. The purpose of this is so that your esophagus will visualize on x-ray film. It is very important that you follow the prep listed below in order to have an adequate procedure performed. PREP:
  1. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the night before the procedure.
  2. Do not smoke or chew gum on the morning of the procedure.
  3. Please arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time to allow time for registration.

Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)
This is a diagnostic procedure for your urinary system. During this procedure you will have to have an IV so that we can give you some medicine (x-ray contrast). The x-ray contrast allows your kidneys, ureters, and bladder to visualize on the x-ray film. If you are age 50 or older, you will have to have some labwork (Creatinine) performed prior to the IVP. The labwork will be checking certain things about your kidneys. It is very important that we have these results before giving you any IV contrast. It is very important that you follow the prep listed below so that you receive a proper exam. PREP:
  1. Drink at least one 8-ounce glass of clear liquids per hour between noon and 6:00 PM the day before the exam.
  2. Drink one 10 ounce bottle of Magnesium Citrate at 1:00 PM the day before the exam.
  3. Adhere to a clear liquid diet after taking the Magnesium Citrate.
  4. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight until the exam is completed.
  5. Please arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time to allow time for registration.

Small Bowel Flow Through
This is a diagnostic procedure to evaluate your small bowel (intestine). In order to perform this procedure, you will be asked to drink a liquid substance called barium. The purpose of the barium is to make your small bowel visualize when the x-rays are taken. After you drink the barium, a series of x-rays will be taken at timed intervals. These will be taken until the barium passes all the way through your small intestine and reaches your colon (large intestine). The length of time varies from one person to the next so you should allow a couple of hours for this procedure to be completed. It is very important that you properly prepare for this procedure so that your small bowel adequately visualizes on the x-rays. Ultrasound Pelvis and/or O.B. Ultrasound
This is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates the organs within the pelvis. If it is an OB ultrasound, it will be evaluating the baby. To prevent a delay once you get here, it is very important that you follow the exam prep that is listed below. PREP:
  1. The patient needs to have a full bladder at exam time in order to perform this procedure.
  2. Drink one quart of water one hour before scheduled time.
  3. Do not empty bladder until the exam has been completed.
  4. Please arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time to allow time for registration.

Abdominal Ultrasound or Abdomen Single Organ
(Ex. Gallbladder, Liver, etc)
This is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates specific organs in your abdomen. It is very important that you follow the prep that is listed below in order to receive an adequate procedure. If you have any questions regarding the procedure or prep, please call the radiology department at 270-487-9231 ext. 1184.
PREP:
  1. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the night before the procedure is scheduled.
  2. Do not chew gum or smoke until after the procedure has been completed.
  3. Please arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time to allow time for registration.

Carotid Doppler
This is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates the carotid arteries in your neck. If you have any questions regarding the procedure or prep, please call the radiology department at 270-487- 9231 ext. 1184.
PREP:
  • There is no necessary prep prior to this procedure. You may eat and drink as usual.
  • Please arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time to allow time for registration.

Lower Extremity Venous Doppler
This is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates the veins in your extremities. If you have any questions regarding the procedure or prep, please call the radiology department at 270-487-9231 ext. 1184.
PREP:
  • There is no necessary prep prior to this procedure. You may eat and drink as usual.
  • Please arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time to allow time for registration.

CT of the Head with or without IV Contrast
This is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates the bone and soft tissue structures of the head. You may have to have some labwork (Creatinine) done prior to the CT procedure. Prior to the procedure there will be a small IV placed in your hand or arm so that the IV contrast can be given to you. During the procedure you will have to lie very still on a table while the machine is taking the x-rays. There will be two different sets of images taken, one without contrast and one with contrast. It is very important that you follow the prep listed below in order to receive an adequate procedure. PREP:
  1. Do not eat or drink anything 2 hours prior to the exam.
  2. If you are scheduled for an afternoon appointment, do not eat or drink anything for approximately 2 hours prior to the procedure.
  3. Please arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time to allow time for registration.

CT of the Chest
This is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates the lungs and soft tissues of the chest. If you are age 50 or older, you will have to have some labwork (Creatinine) done prior to the CT. Prior to the procedure a small IV will be placed in your hand or arm so that the IV contrast can be given to you. During the procedure you will have to lie very still on a table while the machine is taking the x-rays. It is very important that you follow the prep listed below in order to receive an adequate procedure. PREP:
  1. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before the exam.
  2. If you are scheduled for an afternoon appointment, do not eat or drink anything for approximately 4 hours prior to the procedure.

CT of the Abdomen without IV Contrast
(with Oral Contrast)

Contrast Media (x-ray dye) during the CT procedure, you may have to have some labwork done prior to the CT. Prior to the procedure a small IV will be placed in your hand or arm so that the IV contrast can be given to you. During the procedure you will have to lie very still on a table while the machine is taking the x-rays. It is very important that you follow the prep listed below in order to receive an adequate procedure. PREP:

CT of the Spine (Lumbar, Thoracic, or Cervical)
This is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates the vertebrae and disc spaces of your spine. There is no prep for this exam. You may eat and drink as usual. During the procedure you will have to lie very still on a table while the machine is taking the x-rays. Computerized Tomographic Angiography (CTA)
(A CT Exam of the Arteries or Veins)

This is a diagnostic procedure for the blood vessels of a particular organ which your physician has ordered. You will be receiving I.V. Contrast Media (x-ray dye) during the CTA procedure. You may have to have some lab work done prior to the CT. Prior to the procedure there will be a small IV placed in your hand or arm so that the IV Contrast can be given to you. During the procedure you will have to lay very still on a table while the machine is taking the x-rays. It is very important that you follow the prep listed below in order to receive and adequate procedure. PREP:
  • Do not eat or drink anything two (2) hours before the exam.

Nuclear Medicine Hepatobilary
This is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates the liver and gallbladder. You will be given some medication that allows your gallbladder to visualize and then several different images will be obtained. You will need to allow approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes for the procedure to be completed. It is very important that you adhere to the prep listed below in order to have an adequate exam. If you cannot get an answer at that number, call the radiology department at 270-487-9231 ext. 1184.
PREP:
  1. Do not eat or drink anything for 4 hours prior to the procedure.
  2. Please arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time to allow time for registration.
The medications that are given to you during your nuclear exam are ordered the night before the procedure and are very expensive. These medications are ordered specifically for you, so if you cannot keep your appointment for any reason, please notify the nuclear medicine department or the radiology department at the numbers listed above as soon as possible.

Nuclear Medicine Bone Scan / Whole Body / Three Phase
This is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates the skeletal system (bones). You will be given some medication and then several different images will be obtained. This procedure is a two-step process. For the first step you will come in for the injection of the medication. You will need to return 3 hours later for the imaging part of the procedure (this part will take approximately 1 hour). PREP:
  1. There is not any prep for this procedure. You may eat and drink as usual.
  2. Please arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time to allow time for registration.
The medications that are given to you during your nuclear exam are ordered the night before the procedure and are very expensive. These medications are ordered specifically for you, so if you cannot keep your appointment for any reason, please notify the nuclear medicine department or the radiology department at the numbers listed above as soon as possible.

Nuclear Medicine Stress / Rest Cardiac Spect
This is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates the function of the heart. To perform this procedure an IV will be placed in your hand or arm and a heart monitor will be connected to you. While you are walking on the treadmill, your heart rate will be monitored. When your heart rate gets up to a certain rate, you will be given some medication that will make your heart visualize on the nuclear medicine camera. After you get off the treadmill, you will be taken to a different room where your images will be obtained. During the imaging process you will have to lie very still for approximately 30 minutes. After the images are obtained you will be able to leave for approximately 3-4 hours prior to having to come back for the next set of images. The second set of images will be obtained in the same manner as the first set, except you will not have to get on the treadmill. This set of images will take approximately 30 minutes also. It is very important that you adhere to the prep listed below in order to have an adequate exam. Nuclear Medicine Lung Scan
This is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates the function of the lungs. To perform this procedure an IV will be placed in your hand or arm for the administration of a medication that will make your lungs visualize on the nuclear medicine camera. During the imaging process you will have to lie still. If you have any questions regarding the prep or procedure, please call the nuclear medicine department at 270-487-9231 ext. 1361. PREP:
